Foods That May Irritate the Bladder
Even healthy foods that are usually regarded as good can sometimes aggravate bladder discomfort in people with sensitive urinary systems.
Caffeine
Caffeine sources such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks contain caffeine, which is a natural stimulant that brings bladder activity to the point that more frequent urination may occur. In some individuals, urgency or leakage may also be symptoms in addition to increased urination.
Alcohol
Besides being the cause of bladder lining irritations, alcohol also interferes with the signals that the brain sends to the bladder muscles for the control of the bladder. Consequently, this can lead to an increase in the feeling of the need to urinate, loss of bladder control, and dehydration that will cause the urine to be more irritating.
Spicy Foods
Chili pepper, hot sauce, or the use of strong seasonings in a dish can produce a burning sensation or aggravate urinary urgency. The impact is different for each individual, but those who suffer from an overactive bladder or interstitial cystitis are the ones who most often report the intensification of their symptoms after eating spicy foods.
Acidic Fruits
The group of acidic fruits includes citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, besides tomatoes and pineapples. These acids can cause the bladder lining to be irritated, resulting in pain or frequent urination.
Carbonated Drinks
Carbonation, caffeine, and artificial flavors in the drink can increase the bladder chamber pressure, thereby making it more sensitive. Some people may find even the consumption of sparkling water causes their symptoms to worsen.
Artificial Sweeteners
Just about all sugar substitutes, aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose is the main group of products, and are considered to be the cause of bladder irritations in some individuals. In this case, they might behave like sugar for a urinary tract, thereby increasing urgency and frequency.
Processed and Salty Foods
Sodium-rich foods like packaged chips, canned soups, pickles, or processed meats, are the main culprits of bringing extra water into the body, which results in increased urine production. High sodium also puts a heavy load on kidney function, which is at the same time affecting bladder health indirectly.
